Three distillers on one road who all know each other and who we know as neighbours.

The Isle of Jura has three distillers on one road: Jura Distillery (single malt since 1810), Lussa Gin (Scotland's only all-female distillery, 15 foraged botanicals), and Deer Island Rum (Caribbean-style, since 2019).

Jura Distillery

Jura Distillery has been making single malt since 1810. Classic Tour at 10:30am and 1:30pm weekdays. Distillery exclusives in the shop. Lynton worked in whisky for years - we're happy to chat.

Jura Distillery sits right in the middle of Craighouse - you can't miss it. It's been here since 1810, was dismantled in the early 1900s, and rebuilt in 1963. The building dominates the village and the pagoda roof is the first thing you see coming off the ferry.

The Classic Tour is the one for first-timers - it runs at 10:30am and 1:30pm on weekdays. About an hour, and you'll taste the core range. If you want to go deeper, the Warehouse Experience at noon gets you into the bonded warehouses where the whisky ages - a different level of understanding.

The shop is worth a visit even if you don't do the tour. They have distillery exclusives you won't find anywhere else, and the staff know their whisky. Lynton worked with Bruichladdich on Islay for years before we came to Jura, so whisky is part of our world here - we're happy to chat about it.

Lussa Gin

Scotland's only all-female distillery. 15 botanicals foraged from the island. 30 minutes from us at Ardlussa. Tours by appointment. We keep Lussa in the huts.

Lussa Gin is one of our favourite Jura stories. Claire, Georgina and Sofie - three friends - started distilling at Ardlussa, 25 miles up the road from us and about 30 minutes' drive. Scotland's only all-female distillery. They forage 15 botanicals from the island - bog myrtle, lemon balm, ground elder, rose petals - and the gin is distinctive. Not a London Dry with a Jura label. Something that tastes of this place.

They're opening a Juniper Garden, which is worth seeing if you're heading north. Tours are by appointment, Monday to Friday. Call ahead - they're a tiny operation and they're usually distilling.

We keep Lussa in the huts. You'll find it.

Deer Island Rum

Michael and Charlotte's Caribbean-style rum, distilled on Jura since 2019. Now at The Antlers in Craighouse - the turquoise doors at the Big Pier.

Deer Island Rum is Michael and Charlotte's creation - Caribbean-style rum distilled on Jura since 2019. They're now at The Antlers in Craighouse, with the turquoise doors at the Big Pier between the Whisky Gallery and Camella Crafts.

The rum is spiced and good - we've had it in cocktails at The Antlers on a Friday evening and it holds its own. Pop in when they're open, or book an appointment from November onwards.

Can I visit all three distillers in a day?

You can, but it's better to spread it out. Jura Distillery is in Craighouse - easy. Deer Island Rum is at the Big Pier - walk from the distillery. Lussa Gin is 30 minutes' drive north at Ardlussa - make a half day of it and combine with the drive up the island. Book Lussa in advance.

Is there a whisky festival?

Fèis Ìle (the Islay & Jura Whisky Festival) runs in late May. Jura has its own day during the festival. Book accommodation months ahead if you're coming for this - it's the busiest week of the year across both islands.
