The Jura Passenger Ferry runs a fast catamaran from Tayvallich on the Scottish mainland direct to Craighouse on the Isle of Jura. Fifty minutes, from around the end of March to the end of September. Foot passengers, bikes and dogs — under-5s and dogs travel free, bikes £2.50 each.

Fares, timetable and where it sails from

Fast catamaran, Tayvallich to Craighouse, 50 minutes. No car needed. £27.50 single. Nicol calls ahead to the bus from Glasgow. The best way to arrive on Jura.

Fares: £27.50 single. Children under 5 and dogs go free; bikes are £2.50 each.

Schedule: roughly end of March to end of September - it varies year to year, finishing around the Jura Music Festival and Nicol's own schedule. Monday, Wednesday, Friday - two sailings per day. Sunday - one sailing. Check jurapassengerferry.com for this season's dates and the current timetable.

Getting to Tayvallich: About 2.5-3 hours from Glasgow. Drive via Loch Lomond and Loch Fyne, through Lochgilphead, then the B8025 to Tayvallich. It's a beautiful drive.

By public transport: Take the 926 Citylink service from Glasgow Buchanan Street Bus Station towards Campbeltown and get off at Lochgilphead. Then the 425 West Coast Motors bus from Lochgilphead to Tayvallich, which connects with the ferry. Here's the thing most people don't know: Nicol on the JPF will actually call ahead to the bus driver to let them know you're on the boat. The connection works. From Craighouse harbour to the retreat

From Craighouse to us at Knockrome: we'll collect you, or take Gordon's taxi, hire bikes, or walk the coast. Four miles, flat road, sea views.

The ferry arrives in Craighouse harbour. From there, Bothan Jura Retreat is 4 miles north at Knockrome. You have options:

We can collect you. £10 each way from Craighouse — just let us know your ferry time. We do this regularly for foot passengers.

Gordon's taxi — 07803 198 320. Book in advance.

Bikes — Stuart at Jura Cycles (07562 762382) in Craighouse. Hire bikes and ride to us. It's 4 miles on flat road along the coast. A great way to arrive if the weather's good.

Walk — about an hour along Small Isles Bay. Beautiful but you'll be carrying your bags.

Hitchhike — stick your thumb out and you'll almost certainly get a lift.
