The Black Hut.

We tried to design it as a place we would like to stay in ourselves - simple birch ply units with oak floorboards downstairs in an open-plan, double height living space with log burner and a sofa which can easily be made into a comfortable double bed.

The Black Hut has a fully fitted kitchen, hand-built by Shaun, our joiner from Wales, with electric oven, induction hob and fridge freezer. There is a full set of pans, crockery and utensils and anything else you need, just ask and we can probably dig it out for you.

A library ladder leads up to a mezzanine sleeping area with a king size bed with Emma mattress (we have these in our house too - we know how valuable a good night's sleep is!). There is a large skylight looking out over the bay and straight up to the stars.

There's also a shower room with toilet, sink and shower and a large cupboard for storing your belongings.

Patio doors look south over the garden to Corran Sands across Small Isles Bay and lead onto a decking area with table and chairs and a bench and the wood-fired hot tub. It's such a lovely spot for morning coffee, a late night dram, or a place to perch with a book and watch the deer, birds or Atlantic squalls drift by. The walk around Lowlandman's Bay starts right at the door.

The Black Hut was where we proved the idea could work. If people loved this one space, built by hand on a boggy acre on a remote island, then the whole vision for Bothan Jura Retreat was possible. They did. Shaun's kitchen is still our favourite piece of joinery on the site.
