Where to shoot on Jura
The Paps at dawn and sunset, Corran Sands at low tide, the hot tub under stars, and the single-track road into nothing. Jura isn't hard to photograph — the light does the work.
The Paps at dawn and sunset - from Bothan Jura Retreat, looking west. The first light hits the peaks before anything else on the island. The last light goes down between the quartzite mounds. In winter the sun is low and the shadows are extraordinary. In summer, the sunset colours can stream across the sky.
Corran Sands at low tide - the reflections on wet sand with the Paps behind. Morning and evening light. One of those shots where you don't need to think about composition.
The hot tub at night - steam, stars, the silhouette of the mountains. Perfect Instagram fodder.
Corryvreckan & Scarba from the cliff - More the dramatic coastline looking to Scarba than the whirlpool itself, which needs a boat to access. But dramatic, wild scenery. Contact Robert Henry at Jura Boat Tours if you want to get closer.
The single-track road - Jura's one road stretching north into nothing. One car, one deer, empty moorland. Iconic. Any number of places to stop, but the shot heading north up the coast from Laggan is particularly memorable as is looking back south over Loch Tarbert as the road climbs the high ground.
Craighouse harbour - the distillery, the boats, the hotel. Late afternoon light in summer. The village at its most picturesque. Plenty of shots all round.
The west coast raised beaches - ancient, alien, unlike anything you've seen. Artifacts from the Ice Age, hard to reach, but memorable if you do.
